Green Tips: Live In Harmony With Nature

For generations human kind in the mostly industrialized nations has been living against nature instead of in accordance with nature. As a result of our total disregard there has been poor air quality, a rise in chronic and fatal diseases, polluted water, overflowing landfills and a disappearing ozone layer just to name some of the tremendous damage that we have inflicted on our planet. We see the effects everyday in our neighborhoods, our schools and at our place of work. Scientist have published studies and the news media has informed us of our negative impact on the environment, yet most people continue their daily lives without giving a second thought to their contribution of the destruction of our planet.

There are many critics out there trying to justify their behavior by stating for example that the ozone layer depletes naturally yet what they neglect to mention is that our lifestyle has sped up the natural cycle manifold. The critics will also tell you that our water supply is safe, that we have state of the art filtration systems in place. However, recent tests of the drinking water supply in major cities within the United States of America have revealed levels of multiple prescription medications in our drinking water. I could go on and on but I think you are getting the idea.

There are a lot of things that we can do in our daily lives to conserve resources, reduce pollution and to leave the planet a little better than we found it for the next generation. Simple things that each and every one of us can do that will improve our daily lives, positively impact our health and our spiritual well being.

Here are a few simple things every one of us can do:
1. Instead of hauling yard waste and kitchen scraps to the landfill, compost them and improve the garden.
2. Check with the local recycling center to see which items they will accept and recycle cans, plastic, paper, etc.
3. Turn out the lights and turn off appliances when not in use.
4. Replace light bulbs with more energy efficient LED bulbs.
5. Insulate the home to prevent energy loss.
6. Turn off water when not in use.
7. Use a rain barrel to collect rainwater for yard and garden use.
8. Stop using paper plates, paper cups and plastic forks.
9. Combine trips to the store, bank, etc into one trip.
10. Reduce the use of chemicals in the home and garden and use natural alternatives instead.
11. When purchasing new vehicles or appliances, factor energy efficiency in to the buying decision.
12. Purchase products made from recycled materials whenever possible.
13. Donate used household items and clothing so they can be reused by someone else instead of filling up a landfill.

Most of all what we can do is tell our neighbors, our friends, our families, our co-workers and spread the word. Make a difference! We can live more in harmony with nature then against nature. Let’s leave this planet in better shape than we found it so our descendants can enjoy a much healthier and more productive life.

Build A Solar Oven For Under $10 – Use Solar Power To Cook Your Food

Are you looking for ways to save energy and live your life greener? You can cook your food by the light of the sun. What could be more back-to-the-earth and off-the-grid than that? Solar ovens are available commercially, and can be quite expensive. If you are into green living you don’t need me to tell you all the un-green things about stoves and ovens, gas and electric alike. But you may need me to offer you an alternative. So here it is – the simple homemade solar oven that you can make for under 10 dollars.

Your list of materials:

2 cardboard boxes of two different sizes (more on this in a sec)

4 flat pieces of cardboard (2′-3′ square or rectangular)

scrap cardboard

1 small, 18″ wide roll of aluminum foil

1 piece double-strength glass (more on this in a sec too)

white paper glue

black pan

Now, about those boxes – one of them should be able to fit inside the other one with 2 to 3 inches of space all around. And about that glass – it should be half-an-inch longer and half-an-inch wider than your smaller cardboard box.

A solar oven is made up of two parts: the oven itself and a solar collector.

To make the oven:

Paint the inside of your smaller box black.

Cut up your cardboard scrap into pieces and line the bottom of the larger box with a layer of scrap thick enough so that when you place the smaller box inside the larger one, the smaller one’s lip rests about one inch below the larger one’s lip.

Once you’ve got your scrap layer sized right, take that smaller box out for a second so you can fold in the larger boxes flaps. Then place the smaller box inside. Cut up however much more scrap you need to stuff in around the sides of the smaller box so that you’ve got it wedged in there good.

The glass should make a nice seal when placed on top of the oven, with enough of a lip that your finger can hook under it to raise and lower the glass as needed.

To make the solar collector:

Take the 4 flat pieces of cardboard (don’t use double-strength) and cut them out in the shape of an anvil (like the kind the Road Runner drops on Wile E. Coyote’s head all the time). Glue these to the upper, outer rim of your solar oven so that the pieces join together in an overturned lampshade sort of shape. (To do this, glue the shorter of the two parallel sides of each flap to the upper, outer rim of the larger cardboard box. Then glue the angled edges to one another.)

Glue aluminum foil to the upward facing sides of these 4 flaps.

And you’re done!

To use the oven, simply place the food you want cooked inside it and sit the unit out under the sun until sufficiently cooked. Then eat and enjoy your – gas and electricity free!
